Known for its culinary and medicinal qualities, Chilli is a fruit that belongs to genus Capsicum. Chilli was originally cultivated in North Mexico, but is believed to be brought to India by the Portuguese. Chilli is available in more than 400 varieties, the hottest is however ‘Naga Jolokia’, a variety that is cultivated in Assam, India. The pungency of Chilli is measured in Scoville scale. The fruit of Chilli when ripened and dried becomes red chilli. It is grounded to form red chilli powder.
